ESCAPE compiled by Dick Judge Up-dated Feb 12, 2004 I guess you'd have to say that there were two great suspense- mystery-adventure series in the Golden Days of Radio. The greatest would have to be SUSPENSE, with ESCAPE being a close second. Where SUSPENSE was star-oriented, ESCAPE was all about the story line. The difference between the two was that while ESCAPE concerned itself with everyday adventurous situations, with sometimes awful results, SUSPENSE shows were mystery and crime stories. In its heydey movie stars clamored to be part of Suspense but in the background there was ESCAPE with its unforgetable: Three Skeleton Key, An Occurance at Owl Creek Bridge, A Shipment of Mute Fate, Evening Primrose, The Most Dangerous Game, and on and on. These stories and many others have been retained in the minds of many listeners. However the fate of ESCAPE was uncertain almost from the be- ginning. It just seemed that CBS who aired it, just didn't want to give it a proper setting and tried to destroy it from the start. I count 17 changes in the day it was aired in this log. And only 229 titles broadcast over a period of a little over seven years. There was never a full 52 show "year". The ONLY sponsor of any length was the Richfield Oil Companies, and that was for 26 weeks only in 1950. *************************************************************** There were two versions of ESCAPE wth NBC offering its "ESCAPE FROM... " in 1944. The best remembered one was the CBS version, the subject of this log. As far as it can be determined NBC's show ran for 39 weeks. Here are just a few of the titles and cast mem- bers. These are listed to allieve any confusion between the two. Jan 10, 1944 Escape from Easy Money Marvin Miller, Jack Petruzzi Jan 17, 1944 Escape from a Red Carnation Olivia Ressler, Ralph Camargo Apr 17, 1944 Escape from Peace Frank Dane, Ed Prentiss Apr 24, 1944 Escape from Love not known Sep 18, 1944 Escape from Autumn Cliff Subere, Leonard Smith, Ralph Camargo Sep 25, 1944 Escape from Royalty not known ************************************************************************ This is the log for the CBS ESCAPE. There were 229 show titles in the run and the author has chosen to number each "title" rather than each broadcast aired. There are some who wish to consider the East Coast and West Coast versions as two separate shows. The two used the same script but the show was re-done some 3 hrs after the first airing. The problem with those who use broadcast dates is that for some reason they list 12 consecutive shows East Coast/West Coast shows between Jan 7, 1948 and Mar 31, 1948. Adding these 12 programs to the to the 229 titles in this log comes to the 241 shows that these others consider. An alphabetical listing follows the first section of this log. NO. DATE TITLE PRINCIPAL PLAYERS ---- ------------ ----------------------------- ----------------------------- Feb 28, 1947 Out of This World: Dead of Night Berry Kroeger, Art Carney (first audition show) Mar 21, 1947 Escape: Dead of Night Berry Kroeger, Art Carney (second audition show) There were two audition shows. The first was under the aegis of OUT OF THIS WORLD. The second audition was the same program, same script, same cast - only the main title was changed to ESCAPE. These are not counted as part of the series. An alphabetized listing follows the chronological titles shown next. Any comments concerning this log should be directed to the author - - dickjudge@juno.com. ************************************************************************** Symbol explanation: * indicates that this show is not in circulation.
