R I C H A R D D I A M O N D, P R I V A T E D E T E C T I V E ------------- -------------- ------------- ----------------- 1949 - 1953 First Show: Apr 24, 1949 Last Show: Sep 20, 1953 Number Shows: 160 Audition Show: none known Series Description: In 1945, Dick Powell portrayed Phillip Marlowe in the movie "Murder My Sweet" based on Raymond Chandler's novel "Farewell My Lovely." This was a radical departure in character for Mr. Powell from a Hollywood song and dance man to a hard-boiled detective. On June 11, 1945, the LUX RADIO THEATER brought "Murder My Sweet" to radio, again with Dick Powell in the lead. These two performances prompted his selection for the part of Richard Rogue, in ROGUE'S GALLERY after his role for LUX and Richard Diamond four years later. RICHARD DIAMOND, PRIVATE DETECTIVE came to NBC in 1949. It was the creation of Blake Edwards who wrote most of the early scripts and directed some of the shows. Diamond was a slick, sophisticated detective, with a sharp tongue for folks who need it. Diamond enjoyed the detective life, but not as much as entertaining his girl, Helen Asher. After each show, he would croon a number to his Park Avenue sweetheart. Mr. Powell, as a former song and dance man, was perfect for the role, adding an extra dimension to the typical 1940's private eye drama. Helen Asher was portrayed by Virginia Gregg, who also played the part of Brooksie on "Let George Do It" and Betty Lewis on "Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar". The series started unsponsored on NBC. Rexall picked up sponsorship on April 5, 1950 through the last NBC show on December 6, 1950. The series moved to ABC on January 5, 1951, sponsored by the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. They remained sponsor until the series end on June 27, 1952. Richard Diamond made one more appearance on Old-Time radio for a Summer series in 1953, replacing Amos & Andy. All shows were repeats of earlier shows. RICHARD DIAMOND, PRIVATE DETECTIVE made it to TV in July, 1957 and ran until September, 1960, with David Janssen as Diamond. Many of the TV episodes used rewritten radio scripts. Log Comments: Since titles were not given at the start of each show, there's considerable difference from source to source. Although some titles are given in the script, I've only had access to a small number on the RJ Renolds page of the Tobacco Documents Online web site (http://www.toboccodocuments.org). Script titles are shown enclosed in quotes. The scripts I read also listed program number. These are listed after the title in the "Prog. #" column. These are exactly as they appear on the first page of the script. If no script number appears on the script, "none" appears in the column. Where a script title is not known, titles ending in "Case" are used. If no "Case" title is found, the most common title found is used. J. David Goldin's database listed song titles for songs that Dick Powell sang at the end of the show. They are listed under the title where known. The "Avl" column indicates if the show is "Available" (known to be in circulation). Only "yes" is used. In the 1953 CBS Summer season, sponsored by Rexall, all shows are repeats. The original show number is shown after the title when known. Note that the shows for July 5, 1953 and August 23, 1953 may be in error. Both are supposed repeats of shows that were sponsored by R. J. Renolds and aired on ABC. Therefore, I've placed a question mark after the original show number.
