S H E R L O C K H O L M E S --------------- ----------- John Stanley / Ian Martin & George Spelvin (Wendell Holmes) Version 1948-49 Season First Show: Sep 12, 1948 Last Show: Jun 06, 1949 Number Shows: 39 Audition Show: none Series Description: This was the third series following the exit of Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes. John Stanley continued as Holmes from the previous season, but Alfred Shirley no longer played Dr. Watson. Ian Martin took over the role for for the first four episodes. Wendell Holmes played Watson for the remaining 35 episodes. To avoid the confusion of an actor named Holmes playing Dr. Watson, Wendell adopted the stage name of George Spelvin for the season. As in the previous season, the series was again on Mutual, sponsored by Trimount Clothing Co. (Clipper Craft Clothes). Basil Loughrane again produced and directed the series. Announcer was Cy Harrice and music was by Albert Buhrman, as in the previous season. Edith Meiser was no longer the writer for the series. Instead, this duty was shared by Howard Merrill and Max Erhlich. The shows aired in New York over Mutual's flagship station, WOR, on Sundays from 7:00 to 7:30 PM for the first half of the season. On January 3, it was switched to Mondays, 8:30 to 9:00 PM, until the end of the season. Log Comments: Show titles that are from the Holmes canon are shows in uppercase.
