S H E R L O C K H O L M E S --------------- ----------- Robert Langford / Kenneth Baker Version 1967 First Show: Jul 3, 1967 Last Show: Aug 28, 1967 Number Shows: 9 Audition Show: none Series Description: The character of Sherlock Holmes may very well be the most frequently done character on radio. The stories of Holmes' cases were first heard on radio in the US on October 20, 1930. Sherlock Holmes was first heard in the UK on July 3, 1943. Various series appeared on the BBC up to the present day. In 1967, the cases of Sherlock Holmes were heard in South Africa, broadcast by the South African Broadcasting Corporation. Robert Langford played the part of Sherlock Holmes with Kenneth Baker playing Dr. Watson in this series of nine radio plays. All plays were dramatized by Micheal Hardwick. He dramatized almost all the Sherlock Holmes radio plays aired by the BBC in England that aired from 1952 through 1969. These starred Carleton Hobbs, as Holmes, and Norman Shelley, as Watson. The South African productions most likely used the same scripts as the Hobbs and Norman BBC shows. Log Comments: The information came from The University of Minnesota Special Collections / Rare Books internet web site. All shows are listed on J. David Goldin's database (see References below), indicating all are in circulation. They may be difficult to find as they seem to be frequently mislabled as being BBC shows.
